It rots/destroys when it "shows signs of age". It only lasts about 30 seconds. Just barely enough time to sprint to the door.

You were out by a factor of 4.

The key lasted 2 minutes not 30 seconds.
It now lasts 20 minutes to assist you with your zimmer frame.
